Something fashiony

I came across the DKNY 'pre-fall' 2011 collection via one of Harper's Bazaar's tweets. Whilst I can't actually tell you what the point of a pre-fall collection is, I CAN tell you that the abundance of bows, jumpsuits and stripes in this one makes pre-fall collections pretty much my new favourite thing. DKNY ftw! Oh, the fickle world of fashion...

I googled around for a bit to find some better quality images, which I found on NY Mag, and arranged them into these cute collages after Topshop Princess told me you could make them using Picnik. What is there not to love about that website?

I love the balance of simplicity, wearability and cuteness in this collection. I also really like the length of the stripey skirt, too. Will definitely be experimenting with more midi lengths this summer. Or should that be pre-fall? Surely any season other than fall is pre-fall in a way...? Nothing but the best in fashion commentary on this blog, folks!

Finding a collection I really like has made me realise how infrequently this happens these days. I can't really remember my last fashiony post... Unless ripping Lanvin's H&M collaboration a new a-hole counts? Maybe I've just been a bit ignorant of the fashion world lately due to my uni workload. Or due to being a bit ignorant about fashion generally. Either way, I'd like to try and take a more active interest in fashion this coming fashion week. I won't be spamming you runway shots unless it's stuff I think you'll enjoy, so don't worry. I just want to get back in the loop a bit.

Ooh, by the way! You may remember me cryptically talking about my latest uni project. I created a new product concept for Topshop and my tutors advised me to contact the brand and try and pitch it to them IRL. Well, they have invited me to present my idea to them this Friday morning! Eep! I am super excited and not as nervous as I thought I'd be...

Does anyone have any presentation tips? Have never done a *proper* one before. Although it'll probably be easier than my uni ones, where the tutors are always trying to out-Cowell eachother...Time will tell!

  1. i'm a fan of the 5th look but the rest seems a bit pants to me :S

    nothing special really.

  2. Congratulations on your pitch! So exciting!
Just don't speak too fast or say 'like' all the time hehe (those were my criticisms)
I'm sure you'll be great as your clearly confident and passionate about your product which is the most important thing!!
let us know how it goes!

  3. As a lover of bows, stripes and dots (especially dots!!) I think this collection is to die for!!!

Good luck with the presentation. Act super confident, even if you want to kill yourself,it makes everyone look better!

  4. Wow gem! Good luck with the pitch :D I would just say learn your presentation nearly off by heart, smile alot and speak slowly, like tony Blair slow haha! Xx

  5. Massive congrats to you for the Topshop pitch - that's such fantastic news. No advice I'm afraid though because I just fall apart doing any sort of presentation. I guess just have confidence in yourself; they've invited you along and want to hear YOUR idea, so just do exactly that. Nobody's out to get you or anything!
I love that collection too, especially loving the playsuit at the top. I've also realised that it's thanks to you I keep saying 'amazeballs'! Ha xx

  6. Oh Gem that's amazing news!! Go you!!

Just stay calm, talk slowly and clearly (although not as if you're talking to morons, they probably won't appreciate that!) and make eye contact. Oh and wear something from Topshop, they'll probably appreciate that ;-)

  7. Love this collection. Like you said, the simplicity is just perfect x

  8. OMG GEM!!!! Today, the blog. Tomorrow, sunning in the BVI's with Kate Moss and the Topshop crew. PLEASE KEEP US POSTED!!! Dying of excitement for you! I reckon you should take some herby wedges along for extra browny points x

  9. That's brilliant about the Topshop news! Congrats : )!
The only advice I can give is, smile (not like a loon!) and look at the people who are interviewing! Basic advice I know! You've got an advantage tho in that your presentation is about your idea, rather than having to learn something out of a textbook or something for Uni. - My tutors always say they like to see we know what we're talking about (?!)

I hope it goes well anyways lovely, and fingers crossed for you!

  10. Congratulations on securing a meeting with Topshop! I hope it goes well for you :)

I'm not loving this collection at all, it seems quite drab and unflattering. That said, it's not at all like my personal style so I may be biased.

  11. Wow, that's a fantastic opportunity, good luck for Friday! It would make sense for Topshop to go for a perfume after their make-up launch.

No presenting tips sorry because I normally come across as a beetroot with a stammer in my uni ones. Sure you'll be great!

  19. I loved what you said about your tutors trying to "out-Cowell" each other. Once a tutor of mine told me & my partner that our presentation was worse than Britney miming at the VMAs (crushingly topical).

I'm sure the presentation will go fantastically, good luck!

  23. Those jumpsuits look incredible - I wish I wasn't such a short-arse, then maybe I could pull one off! Not that I could afford a DKNY one though...
Good luck for Friday - I'm sure you're gonna knock it outta the park!

  24. Haha pre-fall? Well, if it's an excuse to come up with lovely creations such as that first white dress, I think the fashion world can come up with any ridiculous name they choose.

Good luck with your pitch! I'm really so happy for you, even if you don't make it, it's such a great opportunity!!

    Love, Steph

  26. Oooh, good luck! I've never done a presentation apart from a 10 minute thing on deviant women (which I don't think will help you).

Can completely imagine you having the jumpsuit, top right. You should definitely look at the collections coming up in Fashion Week. There's inspiring stuff to be seen! x

  27. I love this collection too and I may just sell my granny to get a hold of that top jumpsuit, it looks SO cute. I am really loving midi length skirts just now, something incredibly ladylike about them...and fun. You should definitely try it out.

  30. These are all lovely but they look quite 'high street' to me. I know that means it's probably more wearable and realistic but with a dkny price tag haha. Good to know that stripes, bow & polka dots are still in though, my staple wardrobe favourites. Good luck with your presentation! I'll be crossing my fingers for you.

  31. Congratultions! I hope the Topshop pitch goes well :) lol I never really understood the whole idea of a Pre-fall collection either ah well this one is very nice, I can definitely see why you like it!

  32. Just discovered your blog and I'm loving it! I too am looking forward to trying out more midi lengths this Summer - that stripy skirt is lavly! I also checked back to your post about the Lanvin for H&M collection and I completely agree that it was tacky nonsense - the newest H+M in Glasgow saw the collection sell out in like an hour or something crazy like that from when the doors opened - from what I saw of it on the website I could not understand what the fuss was about, at all! Sheesh. Anyways, that's my essay of a comment over :P good luck with your presentation, smile lots and speak slowly are the best tips I've got!xo

  46. What a gorgeous collection! Boutiques.com always try to sling DKNY at me, but they never make it look very appealing. Congrats on the Topshop presentation. Hope it went really well and hope to see you at LFW. Cx

  47. Bit late but I hope your pitch went okay today! Scary stuff! Am sure you did great. My main problem with presenting is talking too fast and too quietly. I hate it though!

I do like this collection, DKNY is not a brand I really think much about but there are some really lovely things here! Love the dress with the red bow belt. :)
