Barry M: Instant Nail Effects review

Hey hey! Happy weekend, one and all!

I'm winding down tonight after a week that has left me positively wound up. Hellish headaches and uni work overload are a pretty uncool combo. TGIF, that's all I can say!

So, I picked up the fairly hyped Barry M instant nail effects polish in Superdrug the other day. I read that it works best over a light base coat, so I opted for Model's Own Mystic Grey:

This is a lovely shade of polish; the perfect grey. It applied nicely and had a great opaque and glossy finish after two coats. It was pretty much there after just the one coat, but I had a lot of time on my hands, so I whacked on another.

Then I busted out the Barry M, which cost about £3.49 I think. It's like crackle polish, you put a coat on and the polish separates so a pattern appears in a few moments. It says not to overlap coats in the instructions, which I found a bit stressful, as the brush only really reaches a third of the nail, so you have to apply extra strokes carefully and really quickly. I'm not sure if I like the finish... Due to the nature of the slightly fiddly application, the finish isn't very consistent (my other hand has quite a blocky pattern). I think it may just take a bit of practice. And maybe another layer of topcoat to make it look more glossy and smooth. Apparently it has a different finish on different polishes, so I'm looking forward to trying it with a different basecoat.

(^ Fail hand)

Looking at my nails now, it does look pretty cool... I think it's a worthwhile purchase for those that like nail art but are too impatient to Konad. Does anyone have any tips on how to get the best out of this stuff? I'm all ears (or eyes!)

Any other nail art products/tips I ought to know about?

  2. I really dont like the barry m nail effect thing, i think a few nails look nice and then if one looks a bit weird it can look messy! like you said with your fail hand ( I lol'd!) the grey looks very swish with the black though, the grey would look fab with black tips... mmm!

  17. That's pretty damn cool, gotta say. And I'm all up for cool nails with as little effort as possible, so this seems like it'd be a worthwhile purchase for me!

Sorry to hear you've had a stressful week - I've also had horrendous headaches all week, but have been off work, so haven't had to worry about that on top - so I do sympathise.. Hope you feel better soon :)

  18. I bought some the other day and loved it so did a review on my blog. One of the girls at work was fascinated with it...It looks really great with a pale base coat. I did mine with a shocking pink base coat - although I almost chose to do the base coat white.

  19. i bought this the other day too. not really loving it but like you say it might take some practice.

i hate how everybody elses and yours.. even your 'fail' hand looks really nice! xo

  20. I seriously mustmustMUST try this out! I haven't been able to find it in Soton though! I keep seeing blog posts pop up on my Dashboard which is just intensifying my need for new groovy effect polish aha (:

  21. I've just tried it. :) It looks nicer on than I thought it would, but I don't think it's quite there yet. Although, when I put it on, I just did it like normal - overlapping slightly - and it seemed to work okay. I'm interested to see if they're going to bring out more colours or more interesting topcoats!

  22. Umm wow, so glad you have told us all about this fab product I really want it now! Your nails look really cool as if a pro manicurist has done them. I usually end up getting paint everywhere. Epic fail ha.

  24. I might give this a try, just because I'm too inclined to put on a really thick coat of nail varnish to do much free hand nail art, although I do really want to give Konad a go.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think the effect is quite nice and very different to your usual nail art designs! I do have to say that I prefer your freehand nail art/Konad patterns though :)

  26. Love the grey, and the effect the polish gives on top. Like you said, I think it'll get easier with practice x

  27. I've tried this on a few different colours and grey is definitely this best colour to have underneath (I use Models Own Grey Day). I've tried it with pink and it looks a bit tacky, but with grey it is quite cool. I think the 'fail hand' doesn't look to bad at all either!

  28. I love me some nail art, but can't help feel a bit underwhelmed by this new effort from Barry M. It just seems a bit too novel....which is a shame. The effect does look good though and it's an interesting idea...i just would prefer if they hooked a gal up with some nail art pens instead.

That models own grey nail polish however...looks perfect. SO perfect.

  43. Trick is to let your base colour polish dry completely and paint on a thin layer of the Barry M Instant Nail Effect, if you put it on too thick it won't crack.

  48. J'adore!!!

But is it possible to make the same without konad? Cause in barcelona or in Paris I dono where I can find it !

  50. Well i have natural nail's and i have never seen any thing like Barry M's effects, its brilliant so many people have asked me where i've had my nail's done and im so proud to say i've done them myself. Hense i've bought it for my daughter and i've tols every one. Nice 1 Barry xxx

  51. I didn't realise Barry M had one until Katy Perry did Black Shatter for OPI! That's how behind I am -_- Can't wait to go pick this up from Superdrug! Hopefully they still have some around, thanks for review! X

  52. I have this in pink. When it says you shouldn't overlap it I don't think it matters if you go over a little bit. But just don't do loads of coats. I think the fail hand looks fine. xxxx
